ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research has been apprised that the nation’s objective of wheat manufacturing throughout the 12 months 2019-20 remained unachieved and the web shortfall of wheat was estimated at 1.41 million tonnes.

According to the report, the wheat manufacturing objective for 2019-20 was set at 25.45 million tonnes.

However, National Food Security Secretary Omar Hameed Khan apprised the senate committee the reasons for the failure to appreciate the wheat manufacturing objective.

These causes included smuggling, hoarding, overprices in native markets, world wheat prices, and the results of native climate change.

He moreover talked about that there was an absence of cooperation of the provincial governments throughout the procurement of wheat and there have been obstacles throughout the inter-provincial movement of wheat.

He talked about that one among many causes for the wheat catastrophe was the minimal help value of Rs. 1400 per 40 kg whereas the price was bigger throughout the open market, due to which farmers purchased the product throughout the open market to get the following value.


The official talked about that the federal authorities was reviewing the help value considering the value of producing and a protection selection could possibly be taken sooner than the next wheat harvesting season.

Also, the chairman of the committee, Senator Muzaffar Shah, requested the ministry to answer to the 18 proposals finalized by the committee and despatched to the ministry for implementation and requested them to submit a report on the next meeting. 

The wheat protection was formulated in session with stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the committee moreover talked about the continued operation in opposition to locusts all through the nation, notably in Balochistan, as Senator Usman Khan Kakar drew consideration to the importance of the people.

The committee was educated that the Chinese authorities donated 50 high-performance air blast sprayers to Pakistan, out of which 12 have been provided to the Balochistan Agriculture Department, along with 10 motorized sprayers have been moreover donated and 835,000 throughout the province. Locusts have been dealt with on acres of land.
